Experts believe that more than 20 million Americans may have contracted Covid-19, 10 times higher than official statistics.
At a press conference with reporters on June 25, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Robert Redfield said the results of a blood sample survey across the US showed that millions of Americans could infected with corona virus to cause Covid-19 epidemic without known or only mild symptoms.
With each confirmed case of Covid-19, the CDC estimates that 10 more people will become infected.
“If we use that ratio to multiply the number of cases, we will have 20 million,” a CDC official said.
Blood samples collected are not only used for Covid-19 testing but also for donation or use in laboratories.
“This virus can infect many people even before they show symptoms. We may have only detected 10% of outbreaks, ”the CDC director said.
According to Worldometers, the US currently records more than 2.4 million people infected with Covid-19, while the number of deaths also increased to more than 124,000. The United States is also the largest outbreak in the world today.
The CDC director said the results of the blood sample survey showed that about 5-8% of Americans had Covid-19.
“The epidemic has not ended. The most powerful tool we have, the strongest weapon, is social spacing. We have a responsibility to implement social spacing strategies to protect vulnerable people and the elderly, ”said the CDC director.
CDC also warns of an increasing number of infections and hospitalizations in the southern and southwestern states. More than 100 CDC staff members have been deployed to about 20 states to assist local health officials in dealing with soaring cases.
US officials also recommend that young people who have no symptoms show up for Covid-19 to make sure they will not spread the virus, after frequent contact with vulnerable people.
“We received information from Florida and Texas that nearly half of all new infections were among people under 35. Many of them have no symptoms, ”an official said.
The number of cases of Covid-19 has been particularly high in Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and West Virginia. These states have experienced an average of double or even higher daily infections in the last 2 weeks.
The number of hospitalizations for Covid-19 also increased in those states. Officials in Texas and Arizona have been raising concerns over hospitals’ increasing ability to accept patients.
However, there are still positive signs at some “mind epidemic” outbreak early in the US. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on June 25 that New York was treating less than 1,000 patients with Covid-19 in hospitals, marking the first time since mid-March, the number of hospitalizations for Covid-19 treatment. in the state it drops below 1,000 people.
Covid-19 treatment hospital admissions also dropped in Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
“We have not yet addressed the second wave of outbreaks at the present time. We are still in the first wave. And the first wave is seeing many different things, ”said the director of the CDC.
