Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said he was positive for the virus, and would quarantine himself. He is the highest certified Russian official to be infected.
Mishustin confirmed the test results in an online meeting with President Vladimir Putin on April 30, and nominated his deputy as acting prime minister.
“I just knew my test results were positive, so I had to follow the self-isolation rule to ensure the safety of my associates,” Russia 24 television channel quoted Mr. Mishustin.
President Putin signed a decree appointing Mr. Andrey Belousov as acting prime minister at the request of Mr. Mishustin.
To date, Mr. Mishustin is Russia’s highest political leader infected with the virus that caused the Covid-19 pandemic.
He attended a meeting of the anti-government coordinating council on Wednesday, saying it was “impossible” to give an exact date to reopen the Russian border.
The country has surpassed 100,000 confirmed cases on April 30, after recording the largest daily increase – 7,099 cases.
Since the outbreak in Russia, 1,073 people have died, according to government data.
