Three children in New York state have just died of a rare inflammatory syndrome that may be linked to the corona virus, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on May 9, raising new concerns about Covid-19.
During a daily press conference, Mr. Cuomo said that he was increasingly concerned about a syndrome with the same symptoms as toxic shock and Kawasaki disease. Symptoms include vasculitis and heart damage.
The three recently deceased children were also positive for Covid-19 or antibodies related to Covid-19, indicating a possible link, but the link is not well understood.
Mr. Cuomo, for weeks has become the leading voice in the US representing states (before the federal government) in prevention, saying New York state is reviewing 73 similar cases. This is shaken by the assumption that children are largely unaffected by the new strain of corona virus.
“We are not too sure of that assumption. Toddlers or preschoolers are having symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease or toxic shock syndrome, ”Mr. Cuomo said.
Scientists are still trying to determine the link, because not all children with Kawasaki disease are positive for corona virus.
Earlier, in late April, the UK and Australia had warned they were monitoring the possible link between the disease and Covid-19, according to the Guardian.
Kawasaki disease was discovered 50 years ago, and doctors still do not understand. This is a common cause for heart disease in children in developed countries, mostly under the age of 5, according to the Guardian. This disease can be cured.
Toxic shock syndrome and Kawasaki are rare. Children with these two illnesses often have fever, shortness of breath, skin rash that does not deform when clicked.
